SOTA wind ensemble review
On Thursday, October 16, School Of the Arts Highschool in San Francisco (555 Portola) held a Wind Ensemble concert in its dilapidated, freezing cold auditorium. The band director, Mr. Steven Hendee, had selected pieces by Gustav Holst, Clifton Williams, Henry Filmore and Robert Russel Bennet, which the Wind Ensemble proceeded to play quite competantly.
My favorite peice was First Suite in Eflat by Gustav Host because i had a cool solo in it. I played it with pizzaz! And the piece is really great. And before you scoff at "band music", remember that Holst has credit as a great orchestral composer as well as a writer for wind ensembles. (Really! It's true! The Planets, Holst's most famous piece for orchestra, will be performed by the super amazing unbelievably awesome San Francisco Symphony Orchestra this June...get your tickets while you still can!)
If you are interested, School Of the Arts will be holding another band and orchestra concert in December. this band program will include pieces by Eric Whitacre (one of my personal favorites!), James Sochinski, and Ron Nelson. The orchestra will be playing Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin, a Beethoven Overture (not Egmont...the other one) and will perform the Mozart Requiem with the School Of the Arts choir. It should be awesome. If you are lucky enough to reside in San Francisco, I invite you all to attend.
