Report: The Goals of the International Music Association and the IMA Web for the Classical Music Community
The International Music Association (IMA) has several goals for the IMA Web that it wishes to meet by 2004, and others that are longer in term and development. The purpose of the IMA Web is to use the Internet, which has limitless potential both now and in the future, to bring the world of Classical Music together. [click Read More below to continue this article]
This includes both the Classical Music education of those that are just beginning to enjoy Classical Music, and providing a community for music lovers and musicians to discuss and enjoy music. It is well known that we face a challenging time ahead, for the world of great Classical Music has dwindled so that fewer and fewer people want to go to concerts or train their ears. Many current composers are writing music that has little or no connection to reality or real people, so the public has little desire to try to understand these works, although many are very beautiful and enjoyable to listen to. Popular music, which grows increasingly artificial, captures the attention of most of the World's young people, causing a bond between the new generations and the "fake" types of music that are simply injected with bloated doses of backbeats, computer-generated sound effects, and electronically altered voices. The image of pop music is "hip" and "sleek," whereas the image of Classical Music is "old" and "stuffy," which couldn't be further from the truth. The fact that music written sometimes over 300 years ago is still being studied, rehearsed in detail, and performed today is testimony to the fact that great Classical Music can live forever, just as Shakespeare's plays and Michelangelo's art. However, it is increasingly difficult to remember the names of Pop singers that sang just 5 to 10 years ago. This is unfortunately not what the public sees, though, due to lack of music history and education. Many groups across both the US and the World have attempted to bring Classical Music into the lives of schoolchildren through programs such as the New York Philharmonic's Young People's Concerts and the San Francisco Symphony's Concerts for Kids. These programs have proven very effective in teaching Classical Music and making music fun. The IMA wants to build on the accomplishments of these many good organizations by providing the following:
1) A detailed list of the famous composers of the past and present, and samples of their compositions
2) A list of current orchestras/performers/conductors with samples of their recordings
3) A group of articles about each musical instrument, with samples of the instrument's sounds
4) A group of articles about how music is composed, rehearsed, and performed
5) A group of articles about how to listen to music and how to attend concerts
These articles we hope to have available by 2004. However, we cannot attempt to do all of the writing alone. One of the IMA Web's goals is to bring Classical Music lovers and musicians together. Musicians and enthusiasts who have particular knowledge of music are greatly encouraged to submit any articles they may have to the IMA at ima@imusicassociation.com. All articles will be closely read and, if they are of good quality, will be published. These articles can be written about any one of the 5 topics, or anything else. The IMA also wishes to expand its Web services. One such service is the IMA Forums. The IMA Forums are a place to discuss Classical Music in all of its shapes and forms. The IMA Forums can bring casual listeners together with enthusiasts and musicians. The IMA Forums are already open, and can be found by clicking here. In addition to the Forums, we encourage user interaction by using our Reviews section. Whenever you see a concert, hear a recording, or listen to a new composition, click here to view and write reviews. Reviews give music lovers a chance to listen to thoughtful opinions of current music events. The IMA has several long term goals for classical music along with its shorter term goals:
1) An online database of Classical Music compositions along with the ability to stream these compositions at any time. Already if you want to listen to Pop or Rock music, you can use services such as Yahoo's Launch.com or WindowsMedia.com to get access to many so-called "singles." However, finding full-length Classical compositions is much more difficult. Mainly due to corporate and record label restrictions (many of which are justified) and the immense size and bandwidth required to stream 50 minute symphonies, it is hard to find a good selection of online legal Classical Music other that the 30 second samples at Amazon.com, which can hardly be called helpful if you are previewing a 1 hour Mahler Symphony. Our hope is that eventually the Classical Music recording industry will come together with us and other sites to support a project of music education through the ability to listen to online music. This is a goal we hope to meet by 2008.
2) A true "Web" of Classical Music sites. We hope to connect as many Classical sites as we can so that Classical Music lovers can lead the education movement together.
3) A website specifically designed for children. Already, a wonderful exists at www.sfskids.com. We hope we can eventually offer a site that targets Classical Music learning from the youngest ages on to adulthood.
All of these goals are set so that Classical Music will never need to be "saved." It is sad enough that probably the majority of the public who listen to any music have never heard of Stravinsky or Prokofiev, though it is hard to blame the public when Classical radio stations around the US have been removing 20th Century compositions from the air waves. Hopefully we can bring the true music back into the forefront one would expect some of the greatest works of human genius since the beginnings of our history to remain. Remember to Email us at ima@imusicassociation.com at any time if you have questions or comments about the International Music Association, the IMA Web, or Classical Music.
